Prevent pendrive or external storage virus

When an external storage or pendrive is connected to a windows system and if autoplay is enabled it will try to run files automatically which can also execute malicious files present on the external storage.
Below are some of the steps which can prevent this from happening.

What is Autoplay ?

Autoplay is a feature that automatically starts playing media files or launching applications when a storage device, such as a USB drive or external hard drive, is connected to a computer. In general, autoplay settings can be managed through the operating system settings on your computer. The exact steps may vary depending on the operating system you are using. It's good to disable the autoplay option for external storage.

Below is a process to remove malicious hidden files from the external storage.

Windows:

1. Connect your external storage device to your computer.

2. Open the Control Panel by searching for it in the Start menu or using the Windows key + X shortcut and selecting Control Panel.

3. In the Control Panel, search for "Autoplay" or "AutoPlay" in the search bar.

4. Click on the "AutoPlay" option that appears.
In the AutoPlay settings, you can choose the default action to be taken when specific types of media or devices are connected.

5. Here disable autorun/autoplay function of your external storage i.e. external hard disk or pen drive.

6. Now plugin your pen drive and open any folder of your computer.
Note - Do not open any folder from your external storage or pen drive.

7. Now go to tools then select Folder Option

8. In that box mark the Show Hidden Files & Folders option.

9. Also Uncheck Hide Extension for known file types & Hide Protected OS files.

10. Now click apply and ok buttons and close that folder.

11. On the Desktop, click on windows start button and select Search for files & folders.

12. When the search dialog box appears on the screen, in that click on All Files & Folders, now click on More Advanced Options then select search Hidden files & folders.

13. Now go above & in Look In option, select your external storage or pendrive letter (For example E: Or G:) and hit Enter.

14. This should show all the hidden files and folders on the drive which can be malicious files. You can delete the files and then the external storage is good to go.
