WSUS : Connection Error

Hi,

Today I was creating a new ADR for Windows 8.1 monthly updates, I found that after creating & running the ADR, it was not able to download the updates. Then i tried to open the WSUS console to get the details & i found that there was a connection error in WSUS.

The error was :-

An error occurred trying to connect the WSUS server. This error can happen for a number of reasons. Check connectivity with the server. Please contact your network administrator if the problem persists.

Clicking on "Reset Server Node" did not solved the problem. It did nothing in my case.

When you click on "copy error to the clipboard" you get the detailed error message :-

The WSUS administration console was unable to connect to the WSUS Server via the remote API.

Verify that the Update Services service, IIS and SQL are running on the server. If the problem persists, try restarting IIS, SQL, and the Update Services Service.

The WSUS administration console has encountered an unexpected error. This may be a transient error; try restarting the administration console. If this error persists,

Try removing the persisted preferences for the console by deleting the wsus file under %appdata%\Microsoft\MMC\.

Following message from the log file helped me troubleshoot the issue :-

Verify that the Update Services service, IIS and SQL are running on the server. If the problem persists, try restarting IIS, SQL, and the Update Services Service.

I checked the services which were running in the server & i found that WSUS Service & internal database service was not running (my wsus data base was not created on a SQL instance it was created locally). So, I started both the service & the error was resolved like a charm.
