Updating Lync 2013 client to Skype for Business using SCCM

Hi All,

This month on patch Tuesday Microsoft released an update for Lync 2013, KB2889923. This update was released to update the Lync Clients to Skype for Business. After the installation of this update Lync automatically updates to skype for business but you still find a service named Lync.exe running in your system :) why MS didn't update the name too ?

Ok, So you can do this manually by installing KB2889923 or you can have a more agile & automated process doing this with SCCM. If you are patching your devices using SCCM & have an ADR for MS Office 2013 then you must be already having this update in your site server.

If not then here's a way how you can make it available in SCCM :-

In SCCM Console go to Administrator/Site Configuration/Site/Configure Site Components/Software Update Point -

Check Updates here :-

Run the synchronization again or if you have an ADR created for Office 2013 let it run on it's schedule.
Now, your SCCM should download KB2889923.

Once this KB is deployed on the machine Lync will be updated to Skype for Business and you don't even need a restart after this KB installation.

Read more about Lync -

"Lync" was the name of a unified communications platform developed by Microsoft. It has since been rebranded and integrated into Microsoft Teams. Let me explain:

Microsoft Lync (2010): Initially released in 2010, Microsoft Lync was a communication software that offered instant messaging, presence information, audio and video conferencing, and online meetings. It was designed to facilitate real-time collaboration and communication within organizations.

Skype for Business (2015): In 2015, Microsoft rebranded Lync as "Skype for Business" to leverage the popularity of the Skype brand. The software's functionality remained similar, but it was integrated with Skype, allowing users to communicate with both Skype and Skype for Business users.

Microsoft Teams: Over time, Microsoft developed and expanded the capabilities of Skype for Business and integrated it into a larger collaboration platform called Microsoft Teams. Microsoft Teams, launched in 2017, became the primary communication and collaboration hub within Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365) for businesses and organizations. It offers chat, video conferencing, file sharing, app integrations, and more, providing a comprehensive platform for teamwork and communication.
