Part 14 - SCCM 2012 R2 Installation : DP Configuration

Previous Post : Part 13 - SCCM 2012 R2 Installation : Configuring SCCM Primary Site (Accounts)

When a SCCM Primary site is installed Management Point & Distribution point are installed with the site (You do have option to keep these SCCM roles separate and they can be configured to run on two different servers). Here we will be discussing about Distribution Point & it's properties.

A management point is a component within SCCM that acts as a communication intermediary between SCCM clients and the SCCM site server. Its primary function is to manage client communication, receive and process client data, and respond to client requests. Here are some key points about SCCM management points:
Client Communication: Management points handle the communication between SCCM clients and the SCCM infrastructure. They receive client status messages, inventory data, and policy requests from clients.

Policy Distribution: Management points distribute policies to clients, such as software distribution, software updates, and configuration policies. Clients request policies from management points and receive instructions on how to proceed.

Content Distribution: Management points also provide content distribution services. They store and distribute packages, applications, and software updates to clients. Clients can download the required content from the nearest management point.

Role Hierarchy: In larger SCCM environments, multiple management points can be deployed to manage the client communication load. A hierarchy of management points is set up to ensure efficient communication and load balancing.

Client Registration: Management points handle client registration and provide clients with necessary information to locate the SCCM infrastructure. They help clients find the appropriate site server and establish a connection.

Similarly, A distribution point is responsible for -

Content Distribution: Distribution points are responsible for storing and distributing content within the SCCM infrastructure. They store packages, applications, software updates, and operating system images, making them available for deployment to clients.

Content Availability: Distribution points ensure that content is available to clients within the SCCM hierarchy. They replicate content from other distribution points or deployment points to ensure redundancy and improved content availability.

Network Traffic Optimization: Distribution points help optimize network traffic during content distribution. Clients can download content from the nearest available distribution point, reducing the load on the network and improving download speeds.

Pull-based Model: Distribution points use a pull-based model for content distribution. Clients request content from distribution points based on their deployment requirements. This model allows clients to download content as needed and reduces unnecessary network traffic.

Role Hierarchy: Distribution points can be deployed in a hierarchy to efficiently distribute content across the SCCM infrastructure. Higher-level distribution points replicate content to lower-level distribution points, allowing clients to access content from the most suitable location.

Multicast Support: SCCM distribution points support multicast technology, which enables efficient content distribution to multiple clients simultaneously. Multicast reduces network bandwidth utilization by sending content in a single stream to multiple recipients.

Branch Distribution Points: SCCM provides a specialized type of distribution point called a Branch Distribution Point (BDP). BDPs are designed for use in remote or bandwidth-constrained locations. They minimize the network traffic by caching content locally, reducing the need for content retrieval over the WAN.

Content Validation: Distribution points verify the integrity of the content they store through content validation. Content validation ensures that the content is complete and has not been tampered with. Clients can trust the content downloaded from distribution points.

Role-based Access Control: SCCM allows administrators to configure role-based access control for distribution points. This feature enables granular control over who can access and manage content on distribution points, enhancing security and governance.

Monitoring and Reporting: SCCM provides monitoring and reporting capabilities for distribution points. Administrators can monitor the status and health of distribution points, track content distribution progress, and generate reports to gain insights into content usage and availability.

When the DP is installed on the SCCM Site server it creates following folders in the C:\ Drive :-

When a package is distributed to the DP SCCM copies the package to SMSPKGC$ :-

 Go to Administrator\Distribution Points

Right click on the default distribution point & Select Properties :-

Go to the PXE Tab & check "Enable PXE Support for clients" :-

Check "Allow this distribution point to respond to incoming PXE requests" & "Enable unknown computer support", Click OK:-
